A few specific fixes for hughesand.co.uk

Hughes & Company Solicitors · Tring · website rebuild

I rebuild small-business websites in my spare time when I can see good work being let down by the site in front of it. I spent ten minutes on hughesand.co.uk and three things stood out, all on the first look and all on a phone. Below are those three findings, then a full working rebuild of the homepage you can click through and judge for yourself.

01

The site does not fit a phone screen.

What I sawhughesand.co.uk is built as a fixed-width table layout with no viewport setting, so a phone renders it at desktop width and shrinks it to fit. A prospective client looking you up on a mobile has to pinch and drag sideways to read the contact details, and the navigation sits in a strip fixed at 595 pixels wide that does not reflow. Most people choosing a solicitor now do that first look on a phone, and the first impression is of a site that was set up a long time ago and left.

What the rebuild doesThe rebuild is responsive by default. On a phone the layout reflows into a single readable column, the navigation collapses into a clean menu, and the phone number and the three solicitors are reachable in one tap. On a desktop it opens out to a calm, full-width page. The same content, legible on whatever the client is holding.

02

COVID-19 is still in your main menu.

What I sawAcross the top of the site, beside "home" and "the partners", sits a "covid-19" menu item. The page behind it asks visitors not to come to the office without an appointment "until further notice". That language made sense in 2020, but in 2026 it is the clearest signal on the whole site that nothing has been touched in years, and it is the kind of detail a careful client notices. The fee schedules linked in the footer are dated 2022 and 2023, which reinforces the same impression.

What the rebuild doesThe rebuild drops the dated COVID notice and folds the sensible part, that the firm sees clients by appointment, into a clear "Visit" section. There is nothing on the page tied to a particular year, so it does not age. When something does need updating, it is in one obvious place rather than a standalone page in the menu.

03

Google cannot read who you are or where you are.

What I sawThere is no structured data on the site: no LocalBusiness or LegalService markup, no address or opening-hours information that a search engine can parse, and no Open Graph tags, so a link shared in a message unfurls blank. The page title is just "Hughes & Company Solicitors" with no mention of Tring or what the firm does. For a firm that depends on being found by people searching "solicitor in Tring", that is a lot of ground given away. Real strengths, Nicola being a member of Resolution, Peter a Solicitor for the Elderly, are buried on inner pages.

What the rebuild doesThe rebuild includes LegalService and FAQ structured data with the full Tring address, the phone number and the firm details, so Google can show the practice properly. The accreditations, Resolution, STEP, Solicitor for the Elderly, the SRA recognised-body number, are brought onto the homepage where a client weighing up firms will actually see them.

The next step

If the proposal lands, reply with two or three 20-minute slots in the next ten days for a video call. I take on three Hertfordshire builds this quarter, and the first confirmed wins the slot. If I do not hear back by 11 June, the proposal site comes down.
